3 MOIC-approved craft activities for making your own edible art!

Dessert and art are two long-time loves for MOIC, so here are our coolest edible arts & crafts ideas for some food-safe fun!

FOOD-SAFE PORTRAITS

This is your chance to taste the rainbow by making your very own edible paint, which is really cool since you’ll be able to adjust the color tone, shade and paint consistency all by yourself!

Here’s what you’ll need for your edible paint:

  • Water
  • Plain yogurt (white base)
  • Beetroot powder (red)
  • Turmeric powder (orange/ yellow)
  • Pandan extract (green)
  • Butterfly pea extract or powder (blue)
  • Ube (yam) powder (purple)

Mix ⅛ cup of water with ⅓ cup of yogurt to create your paint base, which you can add color to by mixing in some of the ingredients listed above. The cool thing about mixing your own paint is that you can control both the consistency and the vibrancy of your colors by adjusting the amount of each ingredient.

For your canvas, we highly recommend going with lightly toasted white bread. Having a crispier and drier surface really helps get the paint to stick, but make sure that your bread doesn’t get too brown!

MARSHMALLOW DOLLIES

When we say that this is cute enough to eat, we’re being literal here! This activity is great for exercising your creative muscles, since you’re free to personalize this edible doll with any ingredients you can think of, in any way possible.

These are some basic components you can start with:

  • Marshmallows
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Fruit slices

These ingredients can build a great foundation for your doll, which you can go on to personalize however you like. Use one or two large marshmallows for its body, and use thin pretzel sticks (we recommend Pocky snacks) to skewer its head and limbs into the body.

Try experimenting with different shapes or sizes of marshmallows, or using grapes and berries for its head, carving limbs from apples or carrots – you can even paint clothes or faces on with chocolate sauce and stick on fruit roll-ups to make clothes! One neat tip for sticking toppings onto a marshmallow surface is to tear off a small section of marshmallow first; it’s super sticky under the surface.

EDIBLE PLAYDOUGH (contains peanuts)

We LOVE playing with our food, and this edible playdough recipe makes for the most delicious playtime! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup of smooth peanut butter (you can swap this out with Nutella or Biscoff spread too!)
  • 2 ¼ powdered (icing) sugar
  • ½ cup honey

In batches, mix the powdered sugar and honey into the peanut butter until you reach your desired consistency, and we recommend doing this in a large bowl to avoid getting sugar everywhere! It should feel, well, playdoughy and easily keep its shape when you mold it.

This is when the fun starts; line a table with a baking sheet and dig in! You can create a zoo full of peanut butter animals or even your favorite superhero team – the possibilities are quite literally endless!

There’s no better time to recharge your batteries by embracing healthy creative playtime, and we’ve actually talked about the science of playtime before!
